A Swell Day

On Wednesday, we were scheduled to dock at Dominica. We were looking forward to our excursion, where we were to drive up into the mountains and have a river tubing adventure. However, as we were pulling into Dominica, the captain came on with an unfortunate announcement. While the weather in Dominica was beautiful (mostly sunny and high of 80 degrees expected), the swells to the west of us in the ocean were very high, and the captain said that if we tried to dock, the swell would throw the ship against the dock and that would not be good for the ship or us. So he said they would see if they could get tenders (smaller ships) to the port, and then could transport us from ship to shore by way of these tenders. But he soon announced that the tenders also would not work. As safety is the first issue aboard ship, due to the large ocean swells we would have to skip our excursions in Dominica and move on to the next port. Well, that’s just swell!

Even though we didn’t have a chance to disembark in Dominica, we at least got some pictures of this beautiful island as we were approaching.

We were disappointed that we would not be able to go tubing in Dominica, but decided to make the best of it. So we went up to Deck 17 and laid out in the sun for a while, just glad that we were enjoying 80 degrees and sunshine rather than the cold weather back in Pennsylvania. We still considered ourselves fortunate. After a while, we hit the fitness center to burn off some more of all those calories that we are ingesting. I think my half hour on the treadmill probably burned off three bites of my lunch.

met up with some Magnificat friends again in the afternoon for tea. I visited with women from Buffalo, the Bronx, Rochester, Minnesota, Las Vegas, and two women from Louisiana. I’m really enjoying the time spending with all these women from all over the country that I know from the Magnificat ministry. Of all the cruises we’ve taken, I haven’t been on one where so many of my friends are aboard, and I have so many opportunities to visit with them.

Later this afternoon, Joe and I checked out the shops on the ship, called the Princess Shops. We passed on the t-shirts and mugs, and especially on the Rolex watches and diamond jewelry, but we did find something that got our interest – a candy store. We purchased a bit of candy because we have not been getting enough to eat on the ship!

Joe and I discovered a small International Café that we’ve been enjoying for dinner. Since we usually eat lunch in the buffet where there is an abundance of food to choose from, we like to do a lighter dinner, and the International Café is perfect for a small sandwich or piece of pound cake.

Even though our excursion was cancelled today, we still made the most of another day on the cruise and had a nice, relaxing, enjoyable day.
